The Best Friend also runs and offers support to schools. One of these schools, is the KM 42 learning center in the Mae Sot area. The Best Friend founder Ashin Sopaka founded a school called KM 48 – it’s close to the 48 kilometer sign from Mae Sot – close to the current school. The KM 48 school was destroyed by the Thai authorities. They moved to a new location and opened KM 42 school in 2007.

KM 42 is a primary learning center and currently teaches around 400 children. These children are refugees from Burma, most are in Thailand illegally. Some children live close to the school, others have to travel by hired car to get there, still others sleep at the school site.

Helfen ohne Grenzen supports this school covering the running costs, which includes teacher salaries, land rent, Uniforms, Sport equipment, stationeries, transportation, food and health care. The Spanish NGO Colabora Birmania are supporting this Budget for 100 students, have built dormitory and school buildings and support the dormitory running costs at the school.

Some of the six teachers who work for the school are employed and receive a salary, others work voluntarily. The Best Friend helps by building roofs and maintaining the buildings and by providing school materials such as books.
